One
day, David was sent to deliver food to his brothers who were fighting
against the Philistines. He noticed among the army there was one
huge man, who was shouting and making fun of his brothers.
“Who
is that man?” asked David.
“He
is Goliath.” One of his brothers said wearily, “He is a fierce
and powerful warrior, no one can defeat him.”
David
was not afraid of the giant man and when King Saul heard of David’s
bravery, he called David before him and asked him to fight Goliath.
“I
will fight Goliath, you have no need to worry anymore.” said David.
“But…
but he is a mighty warrior and you are but a young boy.” Replied
Saul.
“I
am not afraid; I have killed a lion and a bear to protect my father’s
sheep.” said David.
King
Saul then gave David his armour and weapons but they were too big for
David. So without any armour David went to face the mighty warrior.
On
his way to meet Goliath, David picked up some stones in a nearby
stream and placed them in his bag. When he got to where Goliath was
he stood in front of him. Goliath looked down at David and laughed.
“Am
I a dog that you come at with sticks?” Bellowed Goliath down to the
small but unflinching David.
“I
may have no weapons,” said David. “But I come against you in the
name of the Lord Almighty. This is gods battle!”
David
then put a stone in his sling and swung it round and round his head.
Then releasing the stone towards Goliath it hit him straight in the
head. The mighty warrior then fell to the ground with a heavy thud,
David had won.
